Interview with Head Coach Gökhan Edman

Can you comment on "Es Volleyball"?
The project, which came to life as "Es Volleyball", is a sports club to start activities following the formation. Although it will have activities in the volleyball branch as the name implies, it was conceived as a club having a wider scope than the activities of a "traditional sports club". "Es Volleyball" has self-imposed, unique objectives.

Being primarily a profitable and professionally managed "company-club" but - attention here - being a club that grows by re-investing the profits back into volleyball. Thus while developing the self by spending the profits continuously in volleyball, serving volleyball and being a pioneer in carrying the by-products to the future with today's tools. It may have sounded a bit complex and ambiguous but I hope that it will be clearer as the discussion continues and the subjects are looked at in more detail.

What is the "professionalism" approach of "Es Volleyball"?
The employees and managers of "Es Volleyball" are professionals; in other words, the managers are here to manage the company properly and to attain profitability instead of the approach of passing their time here. The understanding of "profit" here is the same as with any other company, with a difference in where the profits are spent. As I mentioned in the beginning, what is gained shall return to where it was gained; thus as the snowball rolls into an avalanche, we will grow as we roll. Besides, we also see the service to a number of players as a primary "profit". Providing a most qualitative service to players in a wide infrastructure will be a major profit for us.

What do you mean by "most qualitative service", could you explain that a bit?

  • Material
Primarily, the sports hall that will constitute the education environment and the equipment in it should be of premium quality. The quality levels are important in areas from heating to hygienic conditions, from lighting to the materials in the hall and the training.

  • Planning and content
Secondly, the planning and content of the education to be supplied should be prepared in the light of today's scientific research and the level volleyball has reached today. As we are talking about the planning of education to be provided, it would be appropriate to mention that the training and development plan to be applied to the "sports school-infrastructure" activities, has been standardized and has a rich and realistic content put into application in a way that those that join our programs can see visualize the end of the program. According to the plan, for example, "every volleyball player candidate" who join our sports school-infrastructure program at the age of 10 will play in the field with the "Es Volleyball" uniform, provided that he completes the planned training hours.

  • Trainers
Finally, let us talk about the quality of the "trainer team" who will implement this program and its contents. I will be acting as the head-trainer. Not as the sports schools of celebrities who "have their names but not their bodies", the program that will be executed in every training will be prepared by us, and I will be present in every training; hence in addition to the responsibility of preparing the programs I will have the opportunity of personally contributing to the development of our players. We have decided on a number of criteria for the trainers that will work with us. The qualities of the trainers will be matched against these criteria and those that pass will start working with us. As an example, we have the objective of working with "educated" trainers who attend or have graduated from the departments of "Physical Training and Sports Higher Education" of the academies. While choosing among the candidates, we will co-operate with the instructors of that school. Of course, there will also be the "educated through experience" trainers who have taken part in the Turkish League in the past or have served as trainers in the training of youth for many years.

While on the issue of trainers, the education of trainers is left aside in sports clubs and there are no resources planned for education. Will you have a different approach?
You have touched a vital point. We already act cautiously in the choice of trainers with the criteria I just mentioned. What is more crucial comes after that: The education of trainers. As the trainers start working, they also enter an endless process of education for themselves. As "Es Volleyball", we have prepared in-house education-development programs for both raising the motivation of trainers and increasing their productivity. They can include educational seminars in various subjects as well as seminars and courses abroad. Thus the trainers will continuously regenerate themselves, transfer fresh information to the players and will be able to provide an education rich in content with the requirements of today's sports and volleyball.

Is it not necessary that the trainers are educated about pedagogical needs?
Of course, that is the reason why we contact the "Physical Training and Sports Higher Education" departments of universities and prioritize the selection of trainers from these faculties. The students in those schools get "courses on pedagogical formation"; they have a highly qualified education in their areas. We are trying to attract the fruits of this education into sports and to present it to our players.

The psychological development of players
Here, there is a very important issue for our players as well as trainers and that is the "measurement of psychological development", monitoring and ensuring that they are also educated psychologically in every phase of education. If the coach is aware of the worry levels, anxieties and requirements, if he follows up and monitors these and similar psychological developments, he can be a more efficient coach and the player can have the opportunity to demonstrate his capacities in a more efficient way. We would like to provide a quality service by co-operating with an experienced university instructor.

Is it not that important to measure physical development as well?
Of course! That is the reason why I have pioneered the measurement of physical development in the "A" teams of all the clubs, in the youth sports teams and sports schools that I have been directing. It will not be any different here. I have sufficient experience and knowledge in this area. We have a wide database of the results of all these activities and evaluations based on them. We also get comparative results with the research activities in the universities.

Recently, we started developing tests to measure the development of basic moves in volleyball. Thus, we will surpass the evaluation system based on observations only.

By using the visual tools that are the most effective educational tools, by using video-analysis, we will try to create the opportunity for our players to watch their development and see the techniques necessary for the levels they have to reach.

Are there other activities that you think are important for the players?
We primarily target the attainment of strong sportsmanship characteristics and behavior for our players. We also have targets to award scholarships to our successful players; to help those that are competent and willing for education abroad or to provide these possibilities; and again to help those that are competent to have sporting competitions abroad; organizing sporting competitions for our 13-15 year old players by contacting the other local clubs. In addition to these, there will be summer camp activities, and weekend camps that will combine sporting trips with cultural trips, all for the purpose of enabling social development.

In the very beginning, you mentioned that, by joining the sports school-youth sports activities, every player will play in the youth teams of "ES Volleyball" after two years and having completed the number of hours of training necessary. Could you elaborate on this?
We will not suffice with just 12 players in our youth sports teams; on the contrary, the more players we develop and the more teams with which we join the youth sports leagues, the more profits we gain from them. If we can not develop the candidate players to levels sufficient to play in their teams within, at the latest, two years'time and we can not give them the opportunity to show their skills, that is if the player can not play in the leagues with the uniform of his team, then this can not be defined as success on our side. In addition, we have to create opportunities for our players who have outgrown the youth team getting ready for the "A" teams, to play in the "A" teams.

You have a past with success; championship in the European Confederation Cup, championships in the Turkey Women's League, championships in the Turkey Cup and having worked at all levels in our National teams, World Championship among High schools in 1990. And now you are within a new development. What are you here for?
Life gets more valuable by producing things that are new and directed towards the future, not by repeating the past, by saying new things instead of the old. We have started this co-operation with "ES Volleyball" because we have seen that we can produce works suited to today and the future. I hope, time will prove us right.
